Proof Buffalo Nickels were struck in limited numbers for only six different years of the series. The first period of proof coins was issued from 1913 to 1916. The first year of issue included both Variety 1 and Variety 2 versions. These coins show matte proof surfaces, often toned to a natural gray-blue-pink color. Most are well struck and pieces are always in demand.

The second period of proof coins came from 1936 to 1937. These coins are struck with mirrored fields and polished motifs. These coins were struck in larger numbers, however they remain popular with collectors as the beginning of the modern proof set era.
